The main principles of the research policy of the university administration for the recent five years have been as follows:

1. to create the integral and balanced system of research support and development at the university;
2. to preserve the leading research schools and develop new research trends;
3. to train the research and teaching staff;
4. to develop the research infrastructure in compliance with existing research schools, available human resources and material means in order to ensure the stability of its functioning in a wide spectrum of research trends and applications;
5. to develop the academic and university science integration; to support the projects aimed at creating global and local information networks and on-line libraries; to secure financial support through grants, governmental and non-governmental funding, and the university's own off-budget resources.

The application of these strategic approaches has resulted in raising the quality of the university teaching staff. Out of total 583 university faculty members, 80 hold postdoctoral degrees, 85 are professors emeritus, and 309 have Ph.D.s. In the period from 2000 to 2005, five postdoctoral degrees and ninety-four Ph.D.s were conferred on ASU teachers in the councils of ASU. Three postdoctoral and twenty-four Ph.D. dissertations were defended in the first six months of this year.

Research work of the university is organized in four different forms: according to departmental thematic plans; on the research order; within federal and branch inter-university programs; and grants.

The university has developed a complex thematic plan of research work, its main trends being strategically vital for the educational system, economic and social development of Adygheya. At present, 157 research projects are being carried out in terms of these trends: 29 projects are fundamental, 33 projects are both fundamental and applied, and 95 projects are merely applied.

The developed infrastructure of the university research work includes eleven research and educational centers, seven laboratories and three museums, all of them focused on the development of certain research schools and research trends.

The thematic plan of ASU research work includes eleven most promising fields of research within eight research schools and twenty-two research trends. All eleven fields of research take into account the specific character of the regional status of the university, focus on education, and correspond with the spectrum of the specialists trained at the university.

The priority is given to three major fields of federal level: Information Technologies, Technology of Living Systems, Ecology and Rational Nature
