First Cohort of Seven Students from Non-Pedagogical Fields Successfully Completes ASU’s New Retraining Program in Pedagogical Activity for Secondary Education

Adyghe State University has successfully completed the inaugural cohort of its new retraining program, "Pedagogical Activity in Secondary General Education (Teacher)." This initiative allows students from non-teaching disciplines to acquire additional pedagogical competencies, thereby expanding their career prospects in the context of the country’s rapidly evolving economic landscape. Additionally, the program aims to address the ongoing shortage of qualified teaching staff in schools.

Current statistics indicate that the average age of teachers is approximately 45–46 years. Projections suggest that by 2030, over 35% of educators will be aged 55 and above. This demographic trend underscores an urgent need for new teachers. The teacher shortage has resulted in many educators working double shifts—on average, holding 1.4 full-time positions. The influx of new specialists from this program is expected to help alleviate this workload imbalance.

Since the start of the academic year, seven undergraduate students pursuing degrees in information security, law, biology, mathematics, computer science, and computer engineering—who expressed interest in retraining—have begun supplementary coursework. Outside of regular classes, they have also received training in teaching methodologies, inclusive education techniques, and strategies for working with gifted children. The cohort concluded their training at the end of April with theoretical examinations. In May, all students who successfully passed the theoretical assessments participated in demonstration exams through open lessons at Lyceum No. 35, which served as their internship site.

"All students successfully completed the course. Upon graduating with their primary degrees, they will receive dual diplomas—one as specialists and another as teachers," stated Elena Demkina, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, and head of the retraining program.

The teachers at Lyceum No. 35 commended the high level of preparation and engagement demonstrated by the program's graduates. The initiative was deemed a success, prompting the university to announce a call for applications for the next academic year. The "Pedagogical Activity in Secondary General Education (Teacher)" program is a 750-hour course that offers immersive practical training, personalized support from educators, psychologists, and university methodologists, as well as ongoing internships guided by some of the region’s leading teachers. It includes specialized training in working with gifted and talented students and mastering inclusive education techniques. The program is conducted during students’ free time (two to four classes per week) through interactive formats, master classes, and workshops.

For ASU students enrolled in non-teaching programs during their third year of undergraduate studies or their first year of master's studies, participation in the program is free of charge.
