Celebrating Mathematicians' Day: A Tribute to the Legacy of Lobachevsky and a Day of Mathematical Exploration

This year, for the first time, we are proud to celebrate Mathematicians’ Day—a professional holiday that unites all those involved in this fascinating science.

December 1 marks the birthday of the distinguished Russian mathematician Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky (1792-1856). The proposal to establish Mathematicians’ Day was put forth during a speech by Viktor Sadovnichy, the President of the Association of Mathematics Teachers, Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Academician, at the All-Russian Congress of Mathematics Teachers and Lecturers held on November 23-24, 2023. In early May 2024, Mikhail Mishustin, the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, ordered the inclusion of Mathematicians’ Day in the calendar.

The venue for celebrating Mathematician’s Day in Adygea will be the Adygea State University. On December 1, the event will be open to all who wish to attend a live lecture presented by Alexey Savvateev and other renowned mathematicians. Participants will have the opportunity to explore numerous engaging mathematical exhibits and take part in a team competition—the mathematical regatta.

The events will be conducted by leading scientists, popularizers of science, specialists in the field of mathematics, as well as exceptional teachers and enthusiastic students and postgraduates passionate about mathematics. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at 10:00 AM in the Concert Hall of the main building of ASU.

At 11:00 there will also be a lecture by A. V. Savvateev “The Origins of Russian Mathematics in Persons”. For those who cannot attend in person, a broadcast will be organized at the link. For everyone who wants to, interactive stations and sites will also be working from this time, where you can literally touch mathematics!

And at 14:00 we will start the Family Mathematical Regatta – a large mathematical competition, which, however, does not require special training from the participants. There are only two conditions – 1) no more than 4 people per team, 2) each team must have at least one adult and at least one schoolchild! Registration at the link.

Schoolchildren, their parents, teachers and all interested persons are invited. More information can be found here.
